AIFF Executive Committee brings about a new era for women's football

NEW DELHI: In accordance with the Strategic Roadmap Vision 2047 that was decided on January 7, 2023, the All India Football Federation has resolved to rebuild and restructure women's football in the nation.
The Hero Indian Women's League (IWL) is being redesigned by the AIFF to provide women's football a new face and to boost economic prospects. The top eight IWL-affiliated teams must have a minimum of 10 Indian players with fully professional annual contracts of at least Rs 3.2 lakhs starting in the upcoming season.
After making this choice, the AIFF Executive Committee, which met at the Football House on Friday, April 14, 2023, emphasised that it wanted to rapidly grow the Hero IWL over the next seasons in order to significantly improve women's football in India. The 2025–26 season will include a four-tier league, with the last tier being the state leagues around the nation, as opposed to the 2024–25 season, which will feature 10 teams in the top level followed by two lower divisions.
"This was a landmark Executive Committee meeting, where crucial decisions were taken that would directly impact the future of football in India and take it in a direction that was elaborated by the Strategic Roadmap, Vision 2047," stated AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey. We have discussed a variety of issues as a team and together come up with projects and activities that will change women's football in India in ways that have never before occurred.
"With the support of the Executive Committee's insight and experience, we were able to develop ideas that will enable us to build a dynamic framework. We have made judgements on the league structure for women's football as well as the minimum wage requirements because we believe that doing so will encourage more girls to play the game and advance women's football in India. India's women's football will be able to advance and compete on a global scale.
"This is a World Cup year for Women's Football, and we will set a lot of activities for the women's game," Mr. Chaubey declared.
The Executive Committee has chosen to establish "Project Diamond" for the advancement of outstanding players. Project Diamond will actively involve the FIFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS), which is overseen by Arsene Wenger, the FIFA Chief of Global Football Development. It is anticipated that all of Indian Football's premier academies, as well as those of Hero ISL and Hero I-League clubs, will participate. The goal of Project Diamond is to create a "Iconic Star" who possesses the qualities and abilities necessary to compete at the top level in the beautiful game.
Officials from the FIFA Talent Development Scheme will visit India early in May 2023 to have negotiations about the creation of an Elite League as part of Project Diamond.
In addition to these choices, the Executive Committee has vowed to build Blue Cubs, a comprehensive grassroots project that will provide the groundwork for Blue Tigers. Additionally, it has a top-notch grassroots programme that is deeply multifaceted and collaborates on several levels with organisations like clubs and governmental NGOS. This is yet another element of the Strategic Roadmap 'Vision 2047', which intends to increase the number of young people playing football to 100 million by the year 2047 from the current 35 million by the year 2026.
According to Dr. Shaji Prabhakaran, secretary general of the AIFF, "We made our vision and our aims very clear, documented, and defined. They will serve as our future work's compass and guiding principles. We have created action plans and actions today in light of that. I want to express my gratitude to the Executive Committee for considering and approving the initiatives that will determine the direction of Indian football in the future. This will assist us in achieving our Vision 2047 objectives, both short- and long-term.
"We believe that today should be a day of celebration for all the actions performed to advance women's football. We are optimistic that this choice would inspire, thrill, and motivate Indian women who play football as well as other women's football enthusiasts. Due to the new thrusts and initiatives, I'm sure that this will result in a rise in participation and the emergence of female stars.
"We have never had a comprehensive grassroots structure and initiatives, and we hope that through Blue Cubs and Project Diamond we will be able to have a robust grassroots and an elite player development structure in our system," the official added.
To improve the degree of competitive opportunity and security for the players at this level, the Executive Committee has chosen to assign equal weight to the amateur football framework. To carry this out, it has chosen to establish the Institutional League, in which ten teams from all around the nation will compete on a home-and-away basis. The league champions, whose teams will be selected through a bidding process, may be given the chance to compete in the Cup competition at the national level. This will undoubtedly aid in giving the traditional institutional teams the respect they deserve.
